Unit 6.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

Bubbl.us is a tool that educators can use to help the brainstorming process in the classroom. The application does offer a free trial offer when you first sign up, but it only allows the user make up to 3 mind maps. Users do have the option to buy the tool on a monthly and annual plan that offers all of the sites features; each option offers a free 30 day trial and the annual offer is 20% off. The site does not have any ads that interfere with the users. One of the great features of Bubbl.us is that it allows users to share their mind maps with colleagues. The mind map may be shared, but it can not be edited by anyone but the creator. Bubbl.us does not offer a specific section for teachers and students, but it can be easily used in any classroom by students and teachers. The ease of use and basic design make it an appropriate learning tool for any school setting. Bubbl.us is a tool that is very simple to use and could be used from grades 3 and up. Younger students would have to obviously have training on how to use the program, but it would help to break students away from using basic pencil and paper to brainstorm, and instead use technology.

Educational Uses of Site

I can think of how I could specifically use this tool in my third grade classroom. I have my third graders brainstorm all the time before we write or even as activation activities before we read a new chapter. Bubbl.us would be a great program to have my students use before writing their rough drafts. The students would have the chance to do some research online, apply pictures to their bubble maps, and write neatly in each bubble (I have some students who have bad handwriting, so this would benefit them a lot). The students could then refer back to this bubble map as they work on their writing. Students could also share the mind map with their peers and have their peers add on to their map.

Review of Site

I think Bubbl.us is a great program that can be used with younger and older students. Now that I have found this program I plan to use it in my own classroom with our next piece of writing. Although the program has a monthly fee, each student could sign up for the free trial and begin by using that. The site was very easy to navigate through making it user friendly. When creating the mindmaps the user has many options they can choose, making each mindmap creative and unique. This is a great website and one that I will be relaying to my fellow educators.
